No other leader in the history of the third world has done more to lift his country from the clutches of poverty and delivered Ethiopia into the forefront of modernity in less than 22 years of rule than has the cherished leader of Ethiopia Meles Zenawi. His Excellency Zenawi leaves behind a country that is flourishing and his legacy will forever be etched in all Africans as an intellectual giant who has done more for Africa than Nelson Mandela could have done in five lifetimes. Today is a sad day for all Africans as a son of Ethiopia has been called home by his maker.

Elias Kifle | July 31st, 2012 Today is the 40th day since Ethiopia’s khat junkie dictator Meles Zenawi has disappeared. ESAT has reported yesterday that its sources have confirmed his death. However, there is no official word from the ruling junta yet.
The dictator’s absence is already causing the regime to start unraveling. Our sources in Addis Ababa today reported that the regime’s hard currency reserve will evaporate in the coming few days, which will lead to the shortage of fuel and other essential supplies. The regime’s spies are also disappearing from local bars, internet cafes and other public places because of fear of backlash from the angry population.

Ethiopian Satellite  Radio and Television (ESAT) just reported in its tonight news that Ethiopian Prime Minsiter Meles Zenawi has died at 57. The radio cited its sources from the International Crisis Group (ICG) and diplomatic community. 

The Radio Station also stated that ICG is now preparing a report entitled "Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa in post Meles Zenawi". 

The International Crisis Group was founded in 1995 by World Bank Vice-President Mark Malloch Brown, former US diplomat Morton Abramowitz and Fred Cuny, an international disaster relief specialist who disappeared in Chechnya in 1995. Their aim was to create an organisation, wholly independent from any government, to assist governments, intergovernmental bodies and the international community at large in preventing deadly conflict. It is headquartered in Brussels.

Meles Zenawi Asres  was born on 8 May 1955 in Adewa, Tigray and  has been the Prime Minister of Ethiopia since 1995. He was President of Ethiopia from 1991 to 1995. Since 1985, he has been chairman of the Tigrayan Peoples' Liberation Front(TPLF), and he is head of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). 


He graduated from the General Wingate high school in Addis Ababa, then studied medicine at Addis Ababa University (at the time known as Haile Selassie University) for two years before interrupting his studies in 1975 to join the TPLF.Meles Zenawi acquired an MBA (Master of Business Administration) from the Open University of the United Kingdom in 1995 and an MSc. (Masters of Science) in Economics from the Erasmus University of the Netherlands in 2004. In July 2002 Meles received an honorary doctoral degree in political science from the Hannam University in South Korea, according to file on under his name on Wikipedia.

July 26, 2012, SEATTLE – Longtime Seattle resident Sheik Mohamed Hussein Mohamed, “aka” sheik Jamal of Seattle, died suddenly on July 19 in Ethiopia and relatives feared he was killed. Following is a report by friends of the deceased elder:
Sheik Jamal left Seattle on July 17 , 2012 for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to spend Ramadan with his significant others back home. He safely arrived at Bole International airport on July 19, 2012 at 7:45 AM.
Sheik Jamal left Addis for Galamso town in the Eastern part of the country. He rented a private mini bus and left Addis same day. Our sources further confirmed that there were only three people inside the mini bus: the deceased, the driver and an assistant driver. A few miles away from their destination, the driver and his assistant brought the dead body of Sheik Jamal to Galamso hospital. They said: “He passed away due to abrupt “heart attack”.”

The detainees are at risk of torture and other ill-treatment, and there have been numerous reports of beatings in detention against those arrested. Some detainees have been held in incommunicado detention since their arrest without access to family members, often in unknown locations. Amnesty International is further concerned at widespread reports of the beating of protestors during demonstrations, and other examples of excessive use of force by the police during the arrests and the dispersal of protests, resulting in many injuries to protestors. Those arrested in July include members of a committee of representatives selected by the Muslim community to represent their grievances to the government and at least one journalist

የመለስ ዜናዊ አገዛዝ ለሙስሊም ወገኖቻችን የእምነት መብቶች ጥያቄ የሰጠው የጥይት ምላሽ የጥያቄዎቻቸውን ደረጃ አሳድጎታል። ቀድሞ የሙስሊሞች ጥያቄ “የእምነት መብቶቻችን ይከበሩ” “መንግሥት በሃይማኖታችን ጣልቃ አይግባ”፤ “መሪዎቻችንን እኛው ራሳችን እንድንመርጥ ይፈቀድልን”፤ “እኛም እንደ ዜጋ የመሰማት መብት አለን” እና የመሳሰሉት ነበሩ። አሁን ግን ጥያቄው በሕይወት የመቆየትና እንደ ሰው የመቆጠር ጉዳይ ነው። ዛሬ የሙስሊም ወገኖቻችን ጥያቄ በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ በሕይወት የመኖር መብት ጥያቄ ሆኗል።
በተፈጠረው አዲስ ሁኔታ የኢትዮጵያ ሙስሊሞች ጥያቄ የሰው ልጆች ሁሉ ጥያቄ ሆኗል።
በአገራችን በሚገኙ የተለያዩ ሃይማኖቶች ምዕመናን መካከል ከዚህ በፊት ከነበረው እጅግ የላቀ መቀራረብ እየታየ መሆኑ እውነት ነው። ቀድሞ የነበረው መከባበር ዛሬ ወደ መደጋገፍ አድጓል።
ለምሳሌ:-

1. በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ የመለስ ዜናዊ ገዳይ ቡድን በአወሊያ መስጊድ ውስጥ በነበሩት ሙስሊሞች ላይ ጭካኔ የተሞላበት ጥቃት ባደረሰበት ወቅት ክርስቲያኖች አቅማቸው የቻለውን ያህል የመከላከል እርምጃ ወስደዋል። አብረው ተደብድበዋል፤ ቆስለዋልም።
2. በአንዋር መስጊድ ተመሳሳይ ዝግጅት በነበረበት ወቅት የሙስሊም ወገኖቹ ድምጽ ጎልቶ እንዲሰማ አጠገቡ ያለው የራጉኤል ቤተክርስቲያ የድምጽ ማጉያውን አጥፍቷል።
3. በደሴ ከተማ ሙስሊሞች ላደረጉት ሰደቃ ክርስቲያኖች ድንኳን በነፃ ሰጥተዋል፤ እንጀራና ለስላሳ መጠጦችን በማዋጣት ተባብረዋል።

በውጭ አገርም ተመሳሳይ መደጋገፍ እየታየ ነው።
ለምሳሌ፡-

1. በስደት ላይ የሚገኘው የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ቤተክርስቲያን ቅዱስ ሲኖዶስ የኢትዮጵያ ሙስሊሞች ጥያቄ የመብት ጥያቄ መሆኑን በመረዳት ሁሉም ኢትዮጵያዊያን ከጎናቸው እንዲቆሙ ጥሪ አድርጓል።
2. ወያኔ በዋልድባ ገዳም ላይ የሚያደርሰውን ጥቃት በመቃወም በሰሜን አሜሪካ እና አውሮፓ የሚገኙ ኢትዮጵያዊያን ሙስሊሞች ከክርስቲያን ወገኖቻቸው ጎን ቆመው “ዋልድባ ታሪካዊ ቅርሳችን ነው፤ መደፈር የለበትም” እያሉ ድምፃቸውን አሰምተዋል።
3. በደቡብ አፍሪቃ የኢትዮጵያ ሳተላይት ቴሌቪዥን (ኢሳት) ደጋፊዎች በጠሩት ስብሰባ ውስጥ አንድ የፕሮቴስታንት ሃይማኖት መምህር ሙስሊም ኢትዮጵያን ለሚያደርጉት ተጋድሎ አጋርነት ለመግለጽ “ሁላችን በአንድ ቃል ፈጣሪን እናመስግን” በማለት “አላሁ አክበር!” ሲሉ የአዳራሹ ተሰብሳቢ በሙሉ አብሯቸው “አላሁ አክበር” ብሏል።

ይህ በጣም አበረታች ነው። ሆኖም አሁን ለደረስንበት የትግል ደረጃ በቂ አይደለም።
ሙስሊም ወገኖቻችን በጽናት እየታገሉ ነው። በዚህም ምክንያት የጥይት አረር እየዘነበባቸው ነው። ቁጥራቸው በውል ያልታወቁ ሙስሊም ወገኖቻችን ሕይወታቸውን አጥተዋል፤ በርካቶች ቆስለዋል። ሕፃናትና ሴቶች ሳይቀሩ ተድብድበዋል፤ በጅምላ ታፍሰው ታስረዋል።
በዚህ ሁኔታ ውስጥ የክርስቲያን ኢትዮጵያዊያን ተሳትፎ አሁን ከአለበት ደረጃ በላይ መሆን ይገባዋል። የኢትዮጵያ ሙስሊሙ ማኅበረሰብ እያቀረበ ያለው ጥያቄ የሙስሊሙ ብቻ አይደለም። የሙስሊም ኢትዮጵያዊያን ጥያቄ በገዛ አገሩ ተከብሮ እንዲኖር የሚፈልግ ኢትዮጵያዊ ሁሉ ጥያቄ ነው። የሙስሊም ኢትዮጵያዊያን ጥያቄ የሰው ልጆች ሁሉ ጥያቄ ነው።
ክርስቲያን ኢትዮጵያዊያን ድጋፍ መስጠት ሳይሆን ትግሉን ሊቀላቀሉ ይገባል። የሙስሊም ኢትዮጵያን ትግል የሁላችንም ትግል ነው። የትግሉ ውጤትም የጋራችን ነው። በሰው ልጅነት፣ በኢትዮጵያዊነት አንድ ነን። ሁላችንም ፍትህን፣ ነፃነትን፣ እኩልነት፣ ዲሞክራሲን እንሻለን።
ግንቦት 7: የፍትህ፣ የነፃነትና የዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ፣ በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ፍትህ፣ ነፃነት፣ እኩልነትና ዲሞክራሲ እንዲኖር የሚፈልግ ኢትዮጵያዊ ሁሉ ዛሬውኑ የኢትዮጵያ ሙስሊሞችን ትግል እንዲቀላቀል በይፋ ጥሪ ያደርጋል።
ትግሉ የሁላችን፤ ድሉም የጋራችን ነው።

The National (DUBAI) – Ethiopia has banned its citizens from applying for domestic or blue-collar jobs in the UAE until an agreement can be reached to protect their rights.
The Ethiopian consul general said the freeze was a temporary move aimed at rooting out unscrupulous recruiters and abuse.
“We have suspended labour from Ethiopia to the UAE because a number of recruitment agencies are working illegally,” said Mesganu Arga Moach. “We want an agreement with the UAE that ensures our nationals’ rights.

Ghana's President John Atta Mills, who was suffering from throat cancer, has died in hospital in the capital, Accra.

A statement from his office said the 68-year-old died a few hours after being taken ill, but did not give details.

"It is with a heavy heart... that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," the statement said.

Mr Atta Mills had ruled the West African country since 2009.

The BBC's Sammy Darko, who is at the military hospital in Accra, says Mr Atta Mills' voice has been degenerating in the last few months.

According to a presidential aide, the leader had complained of pains on Monday evening and died on Tuesday afternoon, Reuters reports.

He had recently returned to Ghana after visiting the US for medical checks, the news agency says.

Vice-President John Dramani Mahama will be sworn in as president at 1800 GMT, in line with Ghana's constitution.

Journalist Elizabeth Ohene, a former BBC editor and member of Ghana's former government, said she had not believed the news at first, as there had been many false reports about his death.

"For the past three or four years there's been news he's been unwell and rumours of his death - twice - and he appeared with grim humour to say they were exaggerated, insisting he was well," she told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

Mr Atta Mills came to power after narrowly winning against a candidate from the then governing New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, in polls in December 2008.

His predecessor, John Kufuor, had to step down after having served the maximum permitted two four-year terms.

It was Mr Mills' third attempt to win the presidency, after defeat in 2000 and 2004 to Mr Kufuor.

He was to run for a second term in December.

An end to the years of harassments and intimidations through arbitrary arrests, indefinite detentions, kidnappings and disappearances, etc. not yet in sight, many Oromo nationals in Oromia Regional State have been arrested and detained in this month of July 2012.

According to HRLHA correspondents in the Country, the major target areas of this most recent government-sponsored violence include the Capital, Addis Ababa, Dambi Dollo of Anfillo District in Western Oromia, Dire Dawa in Eastern Oromia, and Moyal of Borana Zone in Southern Oromia. Although it has been difficult to identify everyone by their names, HRLHA correspondents have confirmed that a lot of Oromos have been arrested and detained in the Capital City of Addis Ababa during the first two weeks of this month of July. Among them was Mr. Hunduma Bantii, an employee with Save the Children (NGO), who was picked up from his office on July 12, 2012 and taken to an unknown destination.

Lengthy prison terms now loom for the Ethiopian journalists and political activists charged with violating the East African nation’s far-reaching anti-terrorism law. Following the conviction last month of eight citizens there, along with 16 who were tried in absentia, a court in the capital Addis Ababa has handed down severe sentences, raising anew serious questions and concerns about the extent to which the Ethiopian judicial system protects its citizens’ constitutionally guaranteed rights of freedom of expression and freedom of association.

The United States remains deeply concerned about the convictions and judgments passed down on the defendants in this case, the third case in six months in which primarily journalists and opposition political activists were tried under the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Proclamation.
The sentences, including 18 years in prison for journalist and blogger Eskinder Nega and life imprisonment for opposition leader Andualem Arage, are extremely harsh and reinforce concerns about the compatibility of the Anti-Terrorism Law with constitutionally guaranteed rights of Ethiopian citizens. Those tried in absentia were also harshly sentenced by the court.

Nega was arrested last September and accused of trying to incite violence with a series of articles that he wrote and posted online. He was also videotaped at a town hall meeting discussing the “Arab Spring” protests in Tunisia, Egypt and other countries and whether such demonstrations were possible in Ethiopia. Prosecutors said Nega’s activities and those of the other defendants violated the anti-terrorism law because they could encourage others to attempt terrorist acts. The defendants denied these charges.

In a show of support for the universal principles of freedom of expression and freedom of association, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Donald Booth attended several sessions of the trial and the State Department has issued statements noting concerns about both the judgments and harsh sentences.

The United States calls again on the government of Ethiopia to stop stifling the freedoms of expression and association and calls for the release of those who have been imprisoned for exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

July 21 (OPride) – Ethiopia’s Minister of Civil Service, former President of Oromia regional state and minister of Science and Technology, Junedin Saddo, is reportedly receiving treatment in South Africa after a car crash.
According to OPride sources, the incident occurred earlier this week near Kaliti, on the entrance to the capital, Addis Ababa.

Meles Zenawi’s war threat against opposition

An Ethiopian Airlines employee, who wants to remain anonymous, informed reporters this afternoon that Ethiopia’s dictator Meles Zenawi has died 4 days ago. But according to our sources, his bodyguards are still at St. Luc Hospital in Belgium. If Meles is dead, what are they doing in Belgium? Is it a diversionary tactic?
When asked how he found out the information, the EAL employee said that he overheard it by accident on Monday from senior airline officials who are members of the ruling party. He added that he receives Ethiopian Review email updates regularly and decided to contact us with this information after hearing Bereket Simon’s interview this morning and was offended by what he heard.

Coupled with similar information we have been receiving since Sunday from several credible sources, the story about the dictator’s death is gaining more credence by the day.

ከኢትዮጵያ ወጣቶች ብሔራዊ ንቅናቄ የተሰጠ የአስቸኳይ ሃገራዊ ጥሪ  

መላው የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብና የዓለም ማህበረሰብ እንደሚገነዘበው ሁሉ የኢትዮጵያ ወጣቶች ብሔራዊ ንቅናቄም የአምባገነኑ የመለስ ዜናዊ ስርዓት እያከተመ እንደሚገኝ ይገነዘባል፡፡

የዓለማችን ተመሳሳይ ታሪኮች እንደሚዘክሩት ሁሌም በአምባገነኖች መዳፍ ስር የወደቁ ሃገራትና ህዝቦች ጨቋኞቻቸው ባልታሰበ ሁኔታ በሞት ሲሸኙ ቀጣዩ ሂደት በአብዛኛው ጊዜ እጅግ አሳዛኝና ወደባሰ አዘቅት ሲወስድ ታይቷል፡፡ በአንፃሩ ደግሞ አልፎ አልፎ በአንዳንድ ሃገራት በህዝቦች በሳል ትግልና መስዋዕትነት እንዲህ አይነቱን ፈታኝ አጋጣሚዎችን በአግባቡ በመጠቀም ወደ ህዝባዊ ሰላማዊና ዲሞክራሲያዊ ስርዓት በመቀየር መልካም የታሪክ ትሩፋቶች ሆነው አልፈዋል፡፡

ከዚህም ታሪካዊ እውነታ በመነሳት የአምባገነኑ መለስ ዜናዊ ስርዓት ውድቀትን ተከትሎ የሚፈጠረውን የስልጣን ሽኩቻ  ምን ያህል አሳሳቢ ሊሆን እንደሚችል በቀላሉ መገመት ይቻላል፡፡ አበው “ሌባ ሲሰርቅ ይስማማል፣ ሲካፈል ደግም ይጣላል” እንዲሉ ፤ በተለይም ሽኩቻው ላለፉት 21 ዓመታት በዙሪያው ባሰባሰባቸው ፈርጀ ብዙ ዘራፊ ቡድኖች መካከል ሊሆን እንደሚችል ከወዲሁ ይገመታል፡፡ በሌላ መልኩ ደግሞ ይህ ዘረኛና እኩይ ሰው በማን አለብኝነትና በእብሪት በጎረቤት ሃገራት ላይ በወሰዳቸው አላስፈላጊ ጣልቃ ገብነቶችና ወረራዎች ምክንያት ሃገራችንና ህዝባችን ሁሌም ለአደጋ እንዲጋለጡ አድርጓል፡፡ በዚህ ፈታኝ ወቅት የሚፈጠረውን ባለቤት አልባነት በንቃት የሚከታተሉና ለበቀል ያቆበቆቡ ጎረቤት ሃገራት የሁኔታውን አመቺነት በመጠቀም አሳፋሪ የታሪክ ጠባሳ ሊያሸክሙን ይችሉ ይሆናል፡፡

ከላይ ከተቀመጡት ግልፅ አደጋዎች በተጨማሪ እጅግ ብዙ አሳሳቢ ሁኔታዎችን ማንሳት ይቻላል፡፡ ነገር ግን የኢትዮጵያ ወጣቶች ብሔራዊ ንቅናቄ ዋና አላማ አደጋዎችን ማመላከት ብቻ ሳይሆን በይበልጥ ይህንን የታሪክ አጋጣሚ ፍፁም ሰላማዊ በሆነ መንገድ በመጠቀም  በኢትዮጵያ ህዝባዊ ሰላማዊና ዲሞክራሲያዊ ስርዓት በዘላቂነት  እንዲገነባ ማስቻል ነው፡፡

ይህንን እውነታ ፍፁም ሰላማዊ በሆነ መንገድና በማስተዋል ከተጠቀምንበት ለእኛ ለኢትዮጵያውያንና ለምንወዳት ሃገራችን አዲስ የታሪክ ምዕራፍ ይከፍትልናል ብለን በፅኑ እናምናለን፡፡ ስለሆነም የኢትዮጵያ ወጣቶች ብሔራዊ ንቅናቄ በዚህ ፈታኝ ወቅት ለምንመኘው ታሪካዊ ድል በጎ አስተዋፅኦ ሊያደርጉ ይገባል የሚላቸውን የተለያዩ የህብረተሰብ ክፍሎች በአንድነት የሚያቀናጅ ሃገራዊ ጥሪ ከዚህ እንደሚከተለው  ያቀርባል፡፡

Fears are growing for the health of Ethiopia’s longtime prime minister Meles Zenawi who is being treated in hospital in Belgium having failed to appear at the African Union summit his country was hosting this weekend.

(The Telegraph) – All of Mr Zenawi’s scheduled public appearances have been cancelled over the past few weeks. He was last seen at the G20 climate summit in Mexico on June 19, looking noticeably pale and thin.

Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, confirmed that he was out of the country for health reasons.
“There is no serious illness at all. It’s minor only,” he told Bloomberg in an interview in Addis Ababa, the capital. “As any human being, he has to get medication and he’ll be coming back soon.”

Ethiopia's government has denied Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is critically ill but says he has been in hospital.

"He is not in a critical state. He is in good condition," spokesman Bereket Simon told the AFP news agency.

A spokesperson for the Ethiopian embassy in London told the BBC the 57 year old was in a stable condition after hospital treatment.

Speculation about his health began when he missed last weekend's African Union summit in Addis Ababa.

There were reports that Mr Meles was in hospital in Belgium, suffering from a stomach complaint.

The Ethiopian embassy spokesperson in London said the prime minister had been visited by high-level officials, but did not say where he was being treated.

Diplomatic sources in Brussels told AFP that the Ethiopian leader was in a hospital in the Belgian capital.

"He is in a critical state, his life is in danger," the agency was told by a diplomat who asked not to be named.

An Ethiopian government press conference about the rumours scheduled for Wednesday morning has been postponed until later this week.

Correspondents say it is believed Mr Meles's last public appearance was at the G20 talks in Mexico last month.

Mr Meles took power as the leader of a rebel movement which ousted the communist government of Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991.

He has won several elections since then, but his political opponents have accused him of using repression to retain power

Twenty Ethiopian journalists and opposition figures accused of trying to topple the government will now spend between eight years and the rest of their lives in prison. As the New York Times reported, these defendants, who were convicted on terrorism charges, were the victims of security concerns being used "as an excuse to crack down on dissent and media freedoms." 

The Horn of Africa country, located between Sudan and Somalia, is seen by the U.S. as a source of stability and as a key regional partner in the war on terror, explained Claire Beston, the Ethiopia researcher at Amnesty International.

Ethiopian Court’s Sentencing in Anti-Terrorism Trial

The United States remains deeply concerned about the trial, conviction, and sentencing of Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega, as well as seven political opposition figures, under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Proclamation. The sentences handed down today, including 18 years for Eskinder and life imprisonment for the opposition leader Andualem Arage, are extremely harsh and reinforce our serious questions about the politicized use of Ethiopia’s anti-terrorism law in this and other cases.

The Ethiopian government has used the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation to jail journalists and opposition party members for peacefully exercising their freedoms of expression and association. This practice raises serious concerns about the extent to which Ethiopians can rely upon their constitutionally guaranteed rights to afford the protection that is a fundamental element of a democratic society.

We reiterate our call for the Government of Ethiopia to stop stifling freedom of expression and we urge the release of those who have been imprisoned for exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms
