In a written response given to questions raised by the members of European Parliament (EP) regarding Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega, the Ethiopian government stated that Eskinder was sentenced not because he practiced his journalistic activities but because “he supported terrorist organizations”.

The Official response also stated that Eskinder had a clandestine contact with the Eritrean government and Ginbot 7 Movement and also trained terrorists that sneaked in from Eritrea to Ethiopia.

Apopular Ethiopian journalist said to ESAT that the response the Ethiopian government gave toEuropean parliamentarians was “hugely disgraceful”.

Journalist Eskinder Nega won the 2012 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award. He is now serving an 18-year sentence on terror charges. Eskinder’s wife, Journalist Serkalem Fasil had been arrested for one year and eight months in relation to the 2005 election and had also given birth to their sole child, Nafkot Eskinder while in prison.
