Long Verande refugees from Ethiopia fears forced dispatch, and fighting for the right to be in Norway, so at seven year old Nathan Eshete  and his parents. At the same time traveling another Ethiopia Europa around to collect money for a broadcasting station that can provide other information to people in Ethiopia than they receive through the government-controlled media.

                                   Party night

Sia 2005 Tamagne Beyene been full-time activist for Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT). He carries now a European tour to raise money.

More than 500 Ethiopians gathered at a big party night when Beyene visited Oslo for a couple of weeks ago. Some of them had traveled far, far away from the asylum capital. The main purpose of Beyene's visit to Oslo was to raise money for the free-standing television and radio station Esat, which reaches throughout Ethiopia and can be followed via the internet around the world.

Beyene has behind him a career as a comedian and entertaining in Ethiopia. In 1996 he was arrested because the authorities disliked some of the content in a presentation he had. Not long after he moved to the United States, where he now lives with his family.

                                     Intolerance

Esat activist tells of a regime in Ethiopia who do not tolerate different opinions.

- Until 2005, we had a whole section of different newspapers. No there is no tolerance for different opinions, only one party and only one television station. 150 journalists have to leave the country, he says to the class struggle.

He is uneasy about the situation in their country and that a country like Norway provides financial support to the regime.

- Norway supports corruption and crime. Norwegian governments have to open his eyes and see if they support the people or the regime in Ethiopia, says Beyene.

- Our task is to provide information and promoting tolerance. Are we not that, it is civil war. The government, which represents an ethnic minority, promotes splitting. It is a dangerous situation. One must be a member of the ruling party to get the job, he says, and adds that the main emphasis of Esat lies on news broadcasts, but there are also broadcast entertainment program.

                 Successful beggar process

The free-standing television and radio station Esat, which has its main bases in Amsterdam and Washington DC, has been on the air since then 2008, but not without problems.

- We must cooperate with a satellite company, rent a channel and pay for it, Beyene explains, adding that both the Ethiopian and Chinese governments have tried to block their Esat.

- China invests in controlling the whole of Africa. They support the Ethiopian government and does not care about human rights, he says.

Experience so far is that Ethiopians residing outside their country ends up in the Esat greatly.

In 2012 it was collected only $ 120,000 in Australia.

- This record will we beat. The goal is to get 5000 people to bind themselves to give $ 20 a month, explaining Esat activist.

From Oslo he went on to both Munich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London and Brussels.

Ethiopian rebels on Monday warned a Canadian oil company against oil exploration in the country’s east and said the area is unsafe because of fighting.
Africa Oil Corporation should halt all operations until the rebels make peace with the government, the Ogaden National Liberation Front, or ONLF said. The group is blamed for the 2007 attack on a Chinese-run oil field in the region in which scores were killed.
The rebels said in a statement that the company is “conspiring with the government to exploit the region’s oil.”
“ONLF calls upon African Oil to desist from paying blood money to Ethiopia until a just settlement of the conflict is achieved and the people of the Ogaden are in a position to be masters of their wealth and interest,” the statement said.
The Ethiopian government spokesman downplayed the statement saying the region is peaceful and that the rebels don’t pose any real threat.
“The region is now fully stable and peaceful. The government and people are mobilizing together to develop the region,” said Communications Minister Shimeles Kemal.
Various ONLF factions have in the near past requested and subsequently negotiated with the government after which they have put down their arms and re-joined the people to lead a peaceful life, Shimeles said.
“They have completely lost that capacity as most of their fighters have put down their arms. Now the remaining faction’s leaders are engaged in a routine propaganda to disturb the ongoing development activities,” he said.
Africa Oil Corp. said on its website that it has three projects in Ethiopia including in the Ogaden Basin where ONLF has been fighting the Addis Ababa government.
The rebels want to create an independent state in the Ogaden region, which is inhabited by mostly ethnic Somalis. Peace talks between ONLF and Ethiopians government in neighboring Kenya ended in disagreement in October.

Oakland Institute Exposed the Human Right Impact of “land grabbing” in Ethiopia

by Betre Yacob
The United States-based Oakland Institute, which is known in struggling for land rights and food sovereignty of Africans,India-based Spentex to farm cotton in Ethiopia has exposed the human right impact of the land investment, which is often characterized as “land grabbing”, on indigenous communities in the Gambella Regional state, Ethiopia.
The new report of the institute says “the government of Ethiopia has not only failed to keep its promises and deliver services and infrastructure, but also has perpetrated human rights abuses in resettling indigenous communities in Gambella to allow for land investment deals to move forward.”
The report, titled “Unheard Voices”, is based on the result of an extensive work and research of the institute on the land investment in Ethiopia, and on personal testimonies of prominent Ethiopian human rights defenders. It also consists the results of Human Rights Watch (HRW) researches conducted on human rights abuses associated with Ethiopia’svillagization program.
The 15 page report says “although Ethiopian officials claim that villagization is a voluntary program, investigations reveal that the government has forcibly resettled indigenous communities from land earmarked for commercial agricultural development, rendering them food insecure and fearful for their survival.” Villagization is an official government policy that “voluntarily” resettles indigenous populations from scattered places to villages of 400-500 families, ostensibly in the name of providing infrastructure and better social services.
According to the report, the government has used fear, violence, and intimidation against indigenous communities in Gambela. Mentioning the HRW, the report says, “Police and soldiers have beaten and arrested those who question these policies, releasing them only on the condition that they support the resettlement program.”
In connection, the report also indicates that the assault and retaliation have continued even after the resettlement. Here the report explains: “Human Rights Watch reports that parents are afraid to send their children to school because of the increased army presence. Parents worry that their children will be assaulted.”
The 15 page report of the institute, which paints a more complete picture of the impact of the “land grabbing”, also asserts that the government has also failed to compensate individuals for their loss of livelihood and land. The report says, “The Oakland Institute did not find any instances of government compensation being paid to indigenous populations evicted from their lands.”
The report explains: “Under international law, forced evictions can only be carried out if they comply with specific standards. The relevant standards derive from a variety of different sources; and they require states to ensure that evictions serve a legitimate public purpose, that they meet the requirements of due process, and that they are accompanied by fair compensation. The testimony of affected individuals compels the conclusion that these evictions are forced, and in violation of international law.”
In addition, the report states that the resettlement has directly affected the livelihoods of the communities and exposed them to serious food insecurity. It explains: “In many parts of Gambella, families farm on sedentary plots along the riverbanks and practice shifting cultivation on higher ground; the former protecting them against poor harvests on the latter. The shifting cultivation practice involves farming on one plot of land for several years before moving on to another. They return to the original plot in seven to 10 years and begin the process again. Yet once they are sent to live in villages, the static lifestyle and lack of water sources render them unable to practice this traditional form of farming.” Here the report criticized the government for not providing training to the resettled communities to learn new forms of cultivation.
According to the report, unable to feed and care for themselves and their families, such shifting cultivators fear they will not survive. The report says, “one displaced individual told HRW: ‘the government is killing our people through starvation and hunger— we are just waiting here for death.’”
According to the report, Nyikaw Ochalla, an Ethiopian human right defender and the Coordinator of Anywaa Survival Organization, told Oakland Institute: “the communities used to live on riverbanks, but they are now in a place where there is no river. They are taken far away from fish, and they can’t fish at all. Land is their identity—it is what they breathe, and they’re taken away from that. Even now, some people are so stressed. They sit in camp and do nothing. Their way of living and their existence has been taken from them.”
The report also indicates that through the so called villagaization program over 1.5 million additional Ethiopians, including 225,000 people from Gambella alone, are in the process of being relocated, and the humanitarian situation is likely to deteriorate further.
“Key Rights Affected”
The report says the Ethiopian government has violated a number of rights of the indigenous populations guaranteed by different international and regional laws and treaties, in order to make a way for commercial agricultural development.
The report explains: “The ICCPR prohibits arbitrary arrests and beatings—such as those carried out against individuals who question the government’s resettlement plans—as well as the mistreatment of those who are held in government custody.”
It adds: “The repressive atmosphere, in which the government responds forcefully to those who dissent against villagization, also suggests violations of the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, both of which are also guaranteed by the ICCPR. The government has also violated or jeopardized the economic and social rights of many of the people it has resettled in order to clear land for investors.”
The report also says: “by removing people to areas that lack housing and infrastructure, separating them from their crops, grazing lands, and other forest and water resources, the government has destroyed the livelihoods of those who rely on such resources—such as shifting cultivators. As a result, large populations that previously produced their own food have now been rendered food insecure, suffering violations of their rights to food, housing and adequate standard of living, all of which are enshrined in the ICESCR..”

Charges renewed against Ethiopian journalist Temesghen

A court revived criminal charges against Temesghen Desalegn today. (CPJ)
A court revived criminal charges against Temesghen Desalegn today. (CPJ)
Nairobi, February 8, 2013--The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the revival of criminal charges against Ethiopian journalist Temesghen Desalegn today in what appears to be a politicized court hearing designed to censor one of the few critical voices left in the country.
A judge in the Federal High Court in the capital, Addis Ababa, revived three charges against Temesghen, former chief editor of the now-defunct Feteh, and one against the general manager of Mastewal Publishing, the publishing company that formerly printedFeteh, according to local journalists who attended the hearing. Temesghen faces charges of "outrages against the constitution," defaming the government, and false publication of articles, while the manager of Mastewal Publishing faces an unspecified charge for allowing the weekly to be published. Under Ethiopian law, a printing company is also held accountable for a press offense by a publication that it publishes.
The charges were filed in connection with articles published in Feteh before the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in August 2012, according to CPJ's review of the charge sheet. State prosecutors cited Feteh articles in court that they said falsely accused the government of interfering in religious affairs and discrimination against certain ethnic groups, as well as articles that allegedly incited violence.
The next court date is scheduled for March 26, local journalists told CPJ.
State prosecutors had suspended the charges against Temesghen in August without explanation, but announced on December 12 that they would re-file unspecified charges against him, Temesghen told CPJ. The court date was adjourned until today, when Temesghen learned he faced the same charges as last year.
Shimeles Kemal, a government spokesman, told local journalists that the charges had been renewed based on further incriminating evidence. He did not offer details.
"Authorities have not provided any new evidence to support the revival of these charges," said CPJ East Africa Consultant Tom Rhodes. "This court case appears to be a political effort to stifle one of the few independent voices left in the country and ensure he cannot continue in the profession. All charges placed against Temesghen and his publisher must be dropped immediately."
Feteh has not published since July 2012, when the government ordered the printer not to publish it. The ministry had blocked the distribution of a Feteh edition that included a front-page story about the conflicting reports surrounding the illness of Meles, according to news reports.
Temesghen has been harassed by authorities in the past. In August 2012, he launched a new independent bimonthly, Addis Times, but the state-run Ethiopian Broadcast Authoritysuspended the publication in January and rejected its application for the renewal of a certificate necessary to hold a printing license, local journalists told CPJ. Authorities cited the Addis Times' failure to carry out administrative procedures including delivering copies to the national archive and publishing names of their shareholders, according to CPJ's review of the official statement. Temesghen denied the allegations, and said they were designed to prevent the paper from further publication.
At least seven journalists are behind bars in Ethiopia, making the country the second leading jailer of journalists in Africa, according to CPJ research. Independent bloggerEskinder Nega was sentenced on July 2012 to 18 years in prison on charges of participating in a terrorist organization and inciting anti-government protests, according to CPJ research.
