Ethiopia’s shrinking prime minister

November 8, 2013 (Ethiopian Review) — The two TPLF factions are appearing to be close to resolving their differences and turning their attention to getting back the prime minister’s position from their puppet, Hailemariam Desalegn, according to Ethiopian Review sources

. The Sibhat Nega faction reportedly has the upper hand, and Abay Woldu and friends have chosen to retreat instead of getting crushed. TPLF insiders have informed Ethiopian Review sources that Tewodros Hagos has emerged as a consensus choice to lead the party and become the next prime minister, but Sibhat Nega’s camp is still campaigning to put Teodros Adhanom in the PM’s office. And Hailemariam is done. He is to be disposed of before the 2015 fake elections get underway, our sources said.

It’s been over a year since Hailemariam became the prime minister in Ethiopia, taking over from the khat-addicted former dictator Meles Zenawi who died in July 2012. Under the Woyanne constitution, the prime minister in Ethiopia has dictatorial powers. Meles Zenawi and his wife used the position to loot the country, mete out punishments against their political opponents, and launch adventurous wars, among other misdeeds. Hailemariam, who claims to be a devout Christian, could have used such power to good use.

 Instead, he has allowed the TPLF junta to continue using him as a puppet, loot the country and torment the people. After one year in power, Hailemariam has not only done any thing good for Ethiopia, his stature, which was small to begin with, grew even smaller. With his slavish behavior toward the TPLF junta, he made himself useful only to his masters. In the end, he will be remembered as a puppet and a coward who lives only to fill his stomach.

After one you year in power, Hailemariam could have solidified his position and make it impossible for TPLF to push him out. He has failed to build and expand his own constituency and assert his authority. He is held in such contempt by his TPLF masters that they don’t even bother to provide him with “national security” briefings.

While Hailemariam was the prime minister over the past twelve months:

1. TPLF thugs continue to arrest, torture and murder innocent Ethiopians.

2. TPLF thugs continue to loot the country while millions of Ethiopians suffer from extreme economic deprivation.

3. Unable to find jobs in their own country, young Ethiopians continue fleeing to other countries, facing extreme dangers. In countries like Saudi Arabia, Ethiopians are treated worse than dogs.

4. Members and leaders of opposition parties continue to be harassed, beaten up and arrested.

Prime Minister Hailemariam cannot escape both moral and criminal accountability for the these and other countless crimes the TPLF junta is committing against the people of Ethiopia.

ወያኔ-ኦ-ሚሊኒየም በሚል የተመራው የግድያ ዘመቻ -በነገው እለት ጥቅምት 30/2006 ዓም ሊካሄድ ታቅዶ እንደነበር የድምጽ መረጃው ያመለክታል።

የሳውዲ ምህረትና የሁለት ኢትዮጵያውያን መገደል

የሳውዲ መንግሥት ለ ሁለተኛ ጊዜ የሰጠው የምህረት አዋጅ ቀነ ገደብ ካበቃበት ካለፈው እሁድ አንስቶ በተካሄደ የፖሊስ ክትትል ሁለት ኢትዮጵያውያን መገደላቸውን ሳውዲ የሚኖሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን አስታወቁ ። እነዚሁ ነዋሪዎች እንዳሉት ባለፉት ሶስት ቀናት ከሞቱት ሌላ በርካታ ኢትዮጵያውያን ታፍሰዋል ።

በአስር ሽዎች የሚቆጠሩ ደግሞ ከሞላ ጎደል ሥራቸውን አቁመዋል። የጅዳው ወኪላችን ነበዩ ሲራክ እንደዘገበው የምህረቱ የመጨረሻ ቀን ካለፈ በኋላ መንግስት በወሰደው እርምጃ ከ 5 ሺህ በላይ የተለያዩ ሃገራት ዜጎች ተይዘዋል። መንግሥት ሕገወጥ የሚላቸው እነዚህ የውጭ ዜጎች የሁለት ዓመት እሥራትና 100 ሺህ የሳውዲ ሪያል ቅጣት ይጠብቃቸዋል። ከምህረት አዋጁ ማለቅ በኋላ በጂዳ የኢትዮጵያውያን ዓለም ዓቀፍ ትምህርት ቤት ሥራ መስተጓጎሉንም ነብዩ ሲራክ ከጅዳ ዘግቧል ።

Ethiopian opposition claims rampant abuse (Aljazeera)

Opposition party says more than 150 of its members have suffered abuse at hands of Ethiopian security officials.

An opposition party has accused the Ethiopian government of beating, abducting and illegally detaining more than 150 of its members during July and September this year.

In a 39-page report launched on Thursday, the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) detailed what it said were “gruesome rights violations” committed against its supporters and members.

“One hundred and fifty members and supporters of the party have been subjected to severe beatings, illegal detentions and abductions by the police and security officials,” Negasso Gidada, the party chairman, told reporters.

“We are asking the government to stop these human rights violations and take those responsible to justice,” said Negasso, who served as the country’s president from 1995 to 2001, before joining the opposition.

A government spokesman declined to comment saying it had yet to receive the report.

Earlier this month, Human Rights Watch said many former detainees – including politicians, journalists and alleged supporters of opposition groups – were slapped, kicked and beaten with sticks and gun butts during investigations at Addis Ababa’s Federal Police Crime Investigation Sector, known as Maekalawi.

Ethiopia intensified its clampdown on peaceful dissent after the disputed 2005 election, the New York-based watchdog said.

Stifling dissent

At the time, the polls ended in violence, killing abouot 200 people.

Opposition candidates won 174 seats, but many did not take them up, saying the vote was rigged.

In an interview with Reuters this month, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said the government was not to blame for the opposition’s poor showing.

He has also accused some opposition party members of collaborating with rebel groups the government had previously labelled as terrorist organisations.

But UDJ’s leaders deny any links with the outlawed rebel groups, and warn the government that “stifling” dissent may encourage violence in the country.

“We are not requesting anything from the government side, we are requesting a level playing ground,” Girma Seifu, a senior UDJ official and the sole opposition politician in Ethiopia’s 547-seat parliament.

The Horn of Africa country has won international plaudits for delivering double-digit growth for much of the past decade, but rights groups often accuse the government of using state institutions to stifle dissent and silence political opposition.
